History

In April 1991, the Stock Exchanges of Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago began cross-border trading of listed securities, the first step in the creation of a regional securities market.

In January 1992 the Securities Exchange of Barbados launched an Unlisted Securities Market, presently known as the Junior Market, to assist small companies which are highly geared an in need of capital. The requirements for admission to the Junior Market are less onerous than those for the main market.

Structure

The Exchange is an association of Broker/Dealers operating a central marketplace. It is self-regulating and operates under the Securities Exchange Act 1982/44 and By-Laws and Rules related generally to the affairs and business of the Exchange.

Originally residual power was reversed to the Minister of Trade to make Regulations inter alia, respecting any matter necessary or advisable in effectively carrying out the purposes of the Securities Exchange Act. On February 15, 1996 that power was transferred to the Minister of Finance.
